What do you think about people who blame Obama or the Bush administration for the crisis?
Some seek to reduce the basic cause of the current economic crisis to the government and state intervention. But in my view, whether and how the government intervenes has also to be explained. And there I assign a major role to the way in which capitalism itself has developed and drawn in the government to help solve its problems.
By now, in my view, major capitalist corporations and the top government officials have learned well their mutual dependence and together direct and exploit the levers of the economy. Now that their control has generated (a) a capitalist economy in crisis and (b) a failed government response thereto, the problem becomes how to transform both partners in failure, both the capitalist economic system and the governmental system.
Some focus exclusively on the latter; he seems to need to believe in a "good old days" story of a once pristine capitalism. But even if that once existed somewhere (it self a dubious proposition), it long ago gave way to forces inside as well as outside capitalism to become what it now is. Rolling history backwards has never, to my knowledge, worked.
