Richard Wolff founded Democracy at Work (d@w) in 2012, as a means to promote the idea of moving beyond capitalism through the transformation of the workplace. Wolff arrived at this conclusion after 30+ years of work with his colleague Stephen Resnick at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. As they worked together to develop their analysis of Marxian theory, it became clear to them that a major part of Marx’s contribution is about transforming the our hierarchical relationships at work.
To explain this principle in an accessible and far-reaching way, Prof Wolff and d@w began hosting monthly Global Capitalism lectures in New York City and released the weekly radio show, Economic Update. Both of these programs continue to this day.
In the last 10 years, Democracy at Work has expanded greatly to offer many programs with other hosts such as David Harvey, Dr. Harriet Fraad, Miguel Robles-Duràn, and more. d@w also publishes books, with three titles authored by Prof Wolff.
As a non-profit 501(c)3, d@w produces anti-capitalist, progressive media. Our work analyzes our capitalist economy critically as a systemic problem and advocates for democratizing workplaces as part of a systemic solution. We seek a stronger, fuller democracy – in our politics, culture and workplaces - based on equal collaboration and shared leadership by workers inside enterprises and throughout society.
We are united under the idea that we can do better than capitalism.
